My Tax Journey: Becoming an Enrolled Agent, One Piece at a Time

Enrolled Agent Certificate for Rita Kuehnis

Taxes are something most of us have to deal with, but very few people look forward to them. My path into tax preparation was a little different. Before adding tax preparation to my professional services, I was already heavily involved in the process surrounding the preparation process: helping clients collect and organize their tax documents, communicating with their tax preparers, and reviewing completed tax returns.

Through that work, I discovered how much I enjoy the tax preparation process and how valuable it can be to help someone bring all the pieces together.

From Europe to the U.S. Tax System

My interest in taxes actually started with preparing tax returns for my own family. After moving from Europe to the United States, I found it especially interesting to learn about the differences between the tax systems. And I discovered something else along the way: a country's tax system tells us much more than percentages, deductions, and rules. It also gives us insight into the priorities and values of the community behind it. That made taxes surprisingly interesting to me.

Later, when I founded SDS Smart Daily Services, assisting clients with their tax records became an integral part of my work. I helped clients organize their documents, communicate with their tax preparers, and review their completed returns. I also saw another challenge firsthand. Finding a tax preparer isn't always easy. Several clients struggled to find someone new after a longtime tax preparer retired or after they moved to a new area.

Working with numbers, recognizing patterns, and bringing structure to complex information has always appealed to me. That is part of what led me to become an electrical engineer in the first place. Combined with my experiences helping clients with their tax matters, it made deepening my knowledge of taxation feel like a natural next step. That eventually led me to become an Enrolled Agent.

So, What Is an Enrolled Agent?

The term "Enrolled Agent," or EA, may not be familiar if you don't work with taxes. An Enrolled Agent is a federally authorized tax practitioner. Enrolled Agents earn this status through the IRS, either by passing a comprehensive examination covering federal taxation or through qualifying former IRS experience.

Enrolled Agents who maintain their status have unlimited practice rights before the IRS. This means they can represent taxpayers before the IRS in matters such as audits, collections, and appeals.

For me, becoming an EA was an important next step. It let me build on the work I was already doing with clients and develop the knowledge to make tax preparation part of the services I provide.

How Is an EA Different from a CPA or Tax Attorney?

Enrolled Agents, CPAs, and tax attorneys can all work with tax matters, but their professional backgrounds and areas of focus are different.

  • Enrolled Agent:  For many individual and small-business tax matters, an EA can be a good choice. EAs focus specifically on taxation and federal tax representation. This makes an EA a natural choice when the primary need is tax preparation, tax planning, or dealing with the IRS.

  • CPA: A CPA may be a better fit when complex accounting is a significant part of the situation, for example when complicated business finances, bookkeeping, or financial records need to be analyzed or reconstructed.

  • Tax attorney: A tax attorney may be the appropriate choice when a tax matter involves litigation, potential criminal or fraud issues, or when attorney-client privilege is important. In those situations, the legal training and protections associated with an attorney can become particularly important.

Ultimately, the right choice depends on your particular situation and the professional's experience with the tax issue you are facing.

Tax Returns Are Puzzles, and I Love Puzzles

There is another, perhaps less serious, reason tax preparation appeals to me: I love puzzles.

Years ago, I put together a 10,000-piece puzzle of the Twin Towers in New York City. By the time I finally completed it, I couldn't bring myself to take it apart. There was only one problem: a completed 10,000-piece puzzle is enormous. So I framed it, and it found a home on the wall of my garage.

A tax return feels a little like solving a puzzle, too. You start with lots of individual pieces: W-2s, 1099s, receipts, expenses, investments, deductions, life changes, and all the other information that belongs to that particular taxpayer. At first, they may seem like a collection of unrelated documents and numbers. But little by little, the pieces begin to fit together and a complete picture emerges.

Fortunately, tax returns have two important advantages over my Twin Towers puzzle: they don't take up half a wall when they're finished, and the finished result can have a much bigger impact on someone's life.

That's the kind of puzzle I can happily work on again and again.

What I Like About Tax Preparation

What interests me most isn't simply entering numbers into tax software. It's understanding the story behind those numbers. Every person's situation is different. A new job, retirement, starting a business, investments, a move, or changes within a family can all create new questions.

I enjoy figuring out how those pieces fit together. But I also enjoy helping people understand what those pieces mean for them. Helping someone move from "I don't really understand this" to "Now this makes sense" is one of the things I find rewarding about this work.

That's the same philosophy I bring to my work at SDS Smart Daily Services: helping clients get organized, understand what they're looking at, and feel that someone is paying attention to the details.

A New Chapter for Smart Daily Services

Adding tax preparation services feels like a natural next step for me. It combines something I already enjoy, organizing complicated information and solving puzzles, with one of the things that has always been at the heart of Smart Daily Services: helping people take care of important parts of daily life that can otherwise feel overwhelming.

Becoming an Enrolled Agent doesn't mean that I suddenly know the answer to every tax question. Tax law is complex, and every taxpayer's circumstances are different. But it does mean that I have made a serious commitment to understanding federal taxation, continuing my education, and helping clients navigate the process carefully.

And I am looking forward to putting the pieces together. Unlike my 10,000-piece puzzle, when we finish your tax return, you won't have to find room for it on the garage wall.
